When ever I hear or sing the song, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus ; I will take to heart the true and heartfelt meaning of it... after learning of how the lyrics came about...our salvation in accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior is free for the asking…He gave His life that we could be free from sin and have eternal life in heaven…and it comes with responsibilities in having faith and standing upon what our faith means …if we don’t act upon what we believe, then what good is it?…
The story about the song…came about in Assam, India where missionaries had been sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and one family accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior..
This was in an area which was among a tribe of headhunters and the chief of the tribe was unhappy about this family who accepted Jesus…giving more honor to Jesus instead of him...he called for his family to be brought before himself and the village to ask the husband about Jesus… the man said, I have decided to follow Jesus , no turning back…then the chief had his children killed…then ask him again not to follow Jesus and he replied, though none go with me, I still will follow, no turning back…and then his wife was killed…the chief couldn’t believe of what he said and ask him not to follow Jesus, and replied…the cross before me the world behind me, no turning back…and the chief had him killed…
Our Faith in Jesus is to be followed with works, standing up for and on The Gospel of Jesus Christ in our daily walk with The Lord…though we probably won't have to give our lives for standing up for Jesus, but we must as our lives depend on it...
Heavenly Father, give us the Faith with strength and boldness in sharing The Gospel…when led by The Holy Spirit in that others would come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior…it’s in the precious name of Jesus we pray…Amen…
